The World Championship leader was extremely pleased with second position on the grid for Sunday’s race at Misano following qualifying, after overcoming the difficulties he experienced on Friday.

Jorge Lorenzo will start from the front row at Misano on Sunday after placing second in qualifying, and the Fiat Yamaha rider was highly satisfied with how his session went on Saturday.
Following a difficult opening practice on Friday in which the Spaniard struggled to get comfortable on his M1 he found a far better set-up in the second session on Saturday morning, which allowed him to battle with Dani Pedrosa for pole before eventually placing second.
“We have improved in every practice here and after the troubles of yesterday I’m happy about this session,” said Lorenzo, who ended up 0.308s off Pedrosa’s pole time. “I have a good pace now and I’m feeling confident about a good race.”
The only lingering issue for Lorenzo was the lack of time in which to gauge an impression of the rear tyre options, but overall he was happy with the performance of his machine.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t profit as much as we might have with the softer tyre at the end of the session and our bike isn’t the fastest here, but we have good corner speed so I hope we will be able to stay with the leaders. I am feeling excited and motivated for tomorrow’s race,” concluded Lorenzo, who is 68 points clear of Pedrosa at the top of the standings ahead of the race.

Pedrosa Wins Motogp at Indianapolis

The Repsol Honda rider took a third win of the season for the first time in his premier class career at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix on Sunday, with home rider and pole man Ben Spies achieving his best MotoGP result to date in second. Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo completed the podium.

Dani Pedrosa narrowed the gap on Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo to 68 points with seven rounds of the 2010 season remaining by winning the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix on Sunday. It was the Repsol Honda rider’s third win of the campaign, the first time he has achieved three wins in a season in the premier class.
Starting from the second row Pedrosa was on the pace early on and by lap two he was in second position, as he set his sights on pole holder Ben Spies. On the end of the seventh lap the Spaniard overtook the rookie on the start/finish straight and never relinquished the lead, eventually crossing the line 3.575s clear of Spies.
For the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider second place marked his best result to date and a second podium in what has already been a fantastic debut season. Spies started from pole — the first of his MotoGP career — and his race result capped off a great weekend which also saw him confirmed as a factory Yamaha rider for 2011.
Completing the podium was Championship leader Lorenzo who had started from second on the grid but dropped to fifth at the start of the race. That failed to affect his concentration however and he battled his way past Andrea Dovizioso and into third just before the midway point of the race, finishing just over three seconds off Spies as his phenomenal record of having placed in the top two in every race this season was finally broken.
A complicated weekend for Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) ended with the reigning World Champion placing fourth in the race, as he won the battle of the Italians with Repsol Honda rider Dovizioso who took fifth. Nicky Hayden was sixth having started from the front row for the first time in his Ducati career.
Rookies Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) and A’lvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) impressed with seventh and eight places respectively, with Aleix Espargaro’ (Pramac Racing) and He’ctor Barbera’ (Pa’ginas Amarillas Aspar) completing the top ten. Loris Capirossi, Hiroshi Aoyama — on his return from injury — and Randy de Puniet were the final three riders to finish the race.
Suffering the disappointment of DNFs were Marco Melandri (lap two) on his 200th Grand Prix start, Casey Stoner who lost the front end of his Ducati Desmosedici GP10 (lap eight), Colin Edwards who was forced to retire with rear tyre issues (lap 17) and Mika Kallio who crashed in turn ten when he hit a bump on lap 18.
Lorenzo moves onto 251 points with Pedrosa now on 183 in second in the standings. Dovizioso is third on 126, with Stoner now seven points behind in fourth. Rossi remains in fifth while Spies moves up to sixth.

Ben Spies first ever MotoGP pole at Indianapolis

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider took his debut MotoGP pole position in qualifying for the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, with Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo and another American in Nicky Hayden completing the front row.

Ben Spies will start a MotoGP race from pole position for the first time on Sunday at Indianapolis after the rookie laid down a fantastic hot lap in qualifying. The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rookie posted a best time of 1’40.105 on his 26th of 28 laps, delighting the home crowd and enjoying another highlight in what has already been an eventful weekend following confirmation of his factory ride for 2011.
Spies was 0.220s quicker than Championship leader and last year’s race winner Jorge Lorenzo who took his Fiat Yamaha M1 machine round in the second fastest time, and there was further joy for the American fans as Nicky Hayden took his first Ducati front-row place with third. Hayden was just a hundredth of a second behind Lorenzo on the timesheet in a typically action-packed and frantic hour-long session.
Andrea Dovizioso had held top spot briefly and his best time of 1’40.559 placed him fourth on the starting grid, with his Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa fifth at just under eight-hundredths further back. Casey Stoner, who had been fastest in both practice sessions, could only qualify in sixth as he lapped 0.559s off the pace of Spies on his Ducati Desmosedici GP10.
The third row will be headed up by Valentino Rossi (Fiat Yamaha) and the Italian was left frustrated but uninjured when he fell at turn six with little over five minutes to go — his second fall of the day following an earlier one in practice. Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) also had a crash in the final stages of the session but managed to secure eighth place, equalling his best qualification so far this season, with Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) completing the top ten.
Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team) was 13th in his first QP since returning from injury, whilst Aleix Espargaro’ (Pramac Racing) had a fall at turn 13 and eventually qualified in 14th.

Indianapolis next target for Lorenzo
August 27, 2010 by martin

Colin Edwards, Nicky Hayden, Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo, Ben Spies and Hiroshi Aoyama were the riders who previewed the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix at the official press conference.

He may be the winner of the last two MotoGP races on American soil but Jorge Lorenzo continued to insist during Thursday’s pre-event press conference that he was not necessarily looking for his eighth win of the season this weekend at Indianapolis, but only to finish and add to his already impressive Championship points tally.
Lorenzo won here at Indianapolis last year, complete with Captain America helmet, and despite his protestations few would bet against a repeat performance from the Fiat Yamaha rider this time around. Captain America has been retired, replaced by a new Iron Man helmet, but Lorenzo’s aim remains the same this weekend, to extend the 77-point advantage he holds over Dani Pedrosa in the Championship standings.
“I come here in very good shape, to a track I love and things have been going very well for us this year,” said Lorenzo. “Obviously I want to win, nobody in the world wants to lose, but I also have to be careful. Nobody knows what will happen in a crash; you could be okay or you could injure yourself so I need to be a little careful.”
Sixth in the Championship, Nicky Hayden is the highest placed American rider going into the Indianapolis weekend. The track, which is only a few hours from Hayden’s home in Kentucky, has been a happy hunting ground for the Ducati rider in the past. Hayden finished second at Indianapolis in 2008 and was third last year, but arrives for this year’s race with a wrist injury from a qualifying crash two weeks ago in Brno.
Hayden, whose younger brother Roger will make his Moto2 debut this weekend, is still looking for his first podium of the season, but is unsure at the moment just how much of a handicap the wrist injury will prove to be this weekend.
“It’s only ten days since I injured my wrist, but already it feels better than Brno,” explained Hayden. “I’ve done a little dirt bike riding with my dad the last week or so, with no problems, but braking on a MotoGP bike is a little different to riding up your drive, so we’ll have to see how the wrist feels. Actually, we don’t have time to be messing around with a sore wrist this weekend.”
Just nine points behind his compatriot in the Championship, Ben Spies could leapfrog Hayden to claim sixth place with a good result at Indianapolis, the track where he finished sixth as a wild card on a Suzuki back in 2008.
Spies claimed his first MotoGP podium at Silverstone back in May, but makes no secret of the fact that a repeat in front of his home crowd this weekend would quite likely be the highlight of his first full season in the premier class.
“You always want your best result to come in front of your home crowd,” stated Spies. “You hope everything goes well in practice, qualifying and the race, but I don’t think you try any harder really. No matter which country we’re in, we’re racing as hard as we can for 45 minutes and it will be the same here at Indianapolis this weekend.”
While his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate was been regularly running at the front, the first half of the season has not been so easy for Colin Edwards. The Texan has struggled to get to grips with the 2010 Yamaha M1 so far this year, leaving him down in a disappointing tenth place in the Championship standings. This weekend’s Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix marks Edwards’ 130th start in the premier class.
“Those 130 races have been special, some of the best times of my life,” declared Edwards. “This season has been difficult; after finishing fifth in the Championship last season we thought things would be cool this year, but we’ve suffered with this six-engine rule. We found something at Laguna, made the bike a bit quicker, and our best results of the season so far came there and at Brno. So, we’re getting there.”
Hiroshi Aoyama makes a welcome return to racing this weekend at Indianapolis, following a nine-week absence while recovering from a fractured vertebra sustained in his warm-up crash at Silverstone. The reigning 250cc World Champion tested the Interwetten Honda RC212V machine for the first time since the crash during the Brno test just two weeks ago and, as a result, has been passed fit to ride at Indianapolis this weekend.
“It’s been a difficult few months,” said Aoyama. “After the crash sometimes my legs were numb, which was pretty scary. It’s hard to be off the bike for so long, but the feeling was quite good at Brno. My back is still not 100% so I will race with a support this weekend. At Brno I had to lay on the floor after ten laps but now, two weeks later, it is much better. I am happy to be racing again this weekend.”

Victory for Lorenzo at Laguna Seca extends Championship lead
July 27, 2010 by martin

The Fiat Yamaha rider won his sixth race of the 2010 campaign at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix after Dani Pedrosa crashed out when leading. Second place for Casey Stoner marked his best result of the season so far, whilst Valentino Rossi finished an admirable third.

Jorge Lorenzo’s Championship lead was stretched to 72 points at Laguna Seca as the Fiat Yamaha rider won the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix ahead of Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi, in a round nine race that saw Dani Pedrosa crash out when leading.
A trademark lightning start from Pedrosa saw him lead into turn one of the first lap and the Spaniard appeared to be making a similar break for victory as he had done in the previous round, as he led for the early part of the race whilst setting a fierce pace.
However, on Lap 11 and with Lorenzo pressuring him for the lead the Repsol Honda rider crashed out at turn five, leaving his fellow Spaniard to take his M1 to a sixth win of the season as he tasted victory on the Californian circuit for the first time.
In second place at 3.517s behind Ducati Team rider Casey Stoner scored his best result of the season so far – his fourth podium in a row – and a comfortable finish with a distance of almost ten seconds back to third place. That was taken by Valentino Rossi, the reigning World Champion achieving a superb podium finish in only his second race back from injury and one which he worked hard for throughout the race.
There were early ends to the race for rookies Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar), the former of whom crashed whilst the latter retired, neither making it past lap four. By that stage Pedrosa was already rapid at the front with Stoner matching him for pace, but on lap five Lorenzo – who had dropped to fourth at the start – managed to pass the Australian who ran wide at turn three.
Then the drama really kicked in as Pedrosa crashed, leaving Lorenzo first with Stoner not far behind, and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) in third with an almost two-second margin over those following. However, that gap was quite admirably shredded away by Rossi as he managed to make up the difference, eventually passing his fellow Italian with five laps to go to slot into third.
As the tyres started to go off towards the end there were changes further down the order, as Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) fought for the honour of highest placing American, a duel that presented plenty of enthralling moments of its own.
Lorenzo eventually crossed the line comfortably ahead of Stoner, with Rossi managing to hold off Dovizioso for the final podium spot. Hayden edged out Spies for fifth place, with the latter’s team-mate Colin Edwards seventh. The top ten was completed by Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki). The remaining two riders to finish the race in 11th and 12th were Roger Lee Hayden (LCR Honda) and Alex de Angelis (Interwetten Honda MotoGP).
Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) suffered the disappointment of crashing out two-thirds of the way through the race when battling with team-mate Melandri for eighth, whilst Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) fell three laps from the end when in a top-ten position.
Lorenzo now has 210 points, with Pedrosa remaining second in the standings on 138 and Dovizioso third on 115.

MotoGP: Rossi & Lorenzo Fiat 500 Leathers
July 23, 2010 by martin
Dainese has created new leather motorcycle racing suits that Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo will wear at the upcoming Laguna Seca MotoGP race.

The Laguna Seca Grand Prix takes places next Sunday in California and during the Moto GP race and the Dainese riders will wear a special Fiat livery. The leathers are intended to support the recent news that Fiat Automobiles are re-entering the American market.
If you can remember back this far, Fiat struggled in the USA for nearly thirty years before finally exiting the market about 25 years ago. Today, Fiat is once again a major automotive manufacturer and financially healthier than it’s been in the past.
This impressive comeback is broadly attributed to Sergio Marchionne, who took over in 2004 as CEO for the Fiat Auto Group, who is now preparing the company to celebrate the launch of the new Fiat 500 in the US market.
The 2011 Fiat 500 will likely be the first and only planned Fiat sold in the U.S. until some positive sales results of the Mini-Cooper-like vehicle take hold.
The leathers for this MotoGP race are white, black and yellow and have been customized on the front, back, arms and legs with the photos of the fan faces that took part in a Dainese photo contest.
The fan faces have been printed on the perforated lorica leather of the Dainese suits: the final effect is a very original black and white poster, composed by the stylized faces of the immortalized motorcycle racing fans.

Lorenzo looking for first win at Laguna
July 23, 2010 by martin

The Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, round nine of the MotoGP World Championship, brings to an end a run of five races in just six weekends and marks the midpoint in the 2010 season, and the pre-event press conference took place on Thursday.

Current Championship leader, Jorge Lorenzo, has finished either first or second in every race so far this season, making him the first rider since Valentino Rossi to start his Championship campaign with eight successive podium finishes. The Fiat Yamaha rider was second last time out in Germany and arrives in California with a 47-point advantage over Dani Pedrosa in the standings, a margin he is keen to maintain or even extend this weekend with yet another podium finish.
“I have some painful memories of this track,” said Lorenzo, during the pre-event press conference. “In 2008 I crashed on cold tyres in the first corner and injured my feet, which meant no dancing during the holiday! Last year I crashed twice on cold tyres, once on the front and once on the rear, but then went on to get pole and finish on the podium. Laguna is certainly a special place, very different to the rest of the circuits we race at, but I like riding here, especially the Corkscrew. I want to race here in perfect condition, without injury, and I hope I’ll have the opportunity this weekend.”
When asked whether he is thinking about the Championship and not just race wins, Lorenzo said: “You have to pay a lot of attention to your limits, know where they are, try and stay within them and finish on the podium whenever it’s possible. We hope to have a good race this weekend.”
Joining the Championship leader at the press conference were the winner of the race in Sachsenring, Dani Pedrosa, two times winner at Laguna Seca, Nicky Hayden, reigning World Champion, Valentino Rossi and Silverstone podium finisher, Ben Spies.
Pedrosa was the winner here at Laguna 12 months ago and arrives at the Californian circuit looking for his first back-to-back wins in the premier class, having won a straight fight with Lorenzo to take victory last time out at Sachsenring.
“The last few races have been good for us and I have good memories from this race last year,” declared Pedrosa. “I hope that, this weekend, we will have more good memories to take away from Laguna Seca with us.”
“The Championship still isn’t over as the gap to Lorenzo can be closed. We have a lot of races to go, but we can only take things race by race and do the best we can,” concluded the Repsol Honda rider.
Leading the home charge this weekend will be Ducati Team rider Nicky Hayden, who currently lies fifth in the Championship standings. The American took two of his three Grand Prix wins here at Laguna, the first in 2005 and the second the following year on his way to the World Championship title. No American rider has finished on the podium at Laguna since Hayden’s win in 2006; a situation the Kentucky Kid is keen to rectify this weekend, at a track he rates as being very special.
“Laguna has always been good to me and to my brothers also,” commented the Ducati rider, whose younger sibling Roger Lee is riding as a replacement for the injured Randy de Puniet on the LCR Honda team this weekend. “I’m looking forward to the weekend ahead and I hope we can get a good result here, because we need one after struggling at the last few races. We’re just going to go for it and see what happens.”
Just six weeks after breaking his leg at Mugello Valentino Rossi made his racing return at Sachsenring, finishing fourth after an intense battle with Casey Stoner that saw the Australian only steal the final podium position from the Italian at the last turn. Rossi was surprised with the result in Germany, but arrives at Laguna, where he won in 2008 and finished second last season, knowing that a podium finish could be within his grasp.
“After the race in Germany I didn’t have any extra problems, especially with my leg, so I’m in quite good shape,” declared Rossi. “It will be important tomorrow to see if Laguna Seca gives me more problems with the leg, but if I can ride like at Sachsenring it’s possible to have a good weekend here. Laguna is a great track and one that I like a lot. I had one of the best wins of my career here in 2008, after battling with Casey. There are a lot of left corners, which is not so bad for me, but the Corkscrew could be a bit of a problem. We will see.”
Ben Spies is also aiming high this weekend, as he returns to one of only three tracks on the calendar at which he has raced a MotoGP bike previously, the other two being Indianapolis and Valencia. The Texan finished eighth at Laguna back in 2008 as a wildcard rider for Suzuki, but has his sights set firmly on a much higher finish this time around.
“Laguna has always been a special track for me, even when I used to come here in the AMA series,” said Spies. “The track will be a bit different on a MotoGP bike, but it will be nice to actually work on the bike set-up on Friday for once, rather than having to learn which way the track goes. You always want your best result of the season at your home race; you try 110% every weekend, but the home race is where you really want to secure your best finish.”
Both Spies and Colin Edwards will receive long awaited upgrades to their Yamaha M1 machines this weekend at Laguna Seca, but Spies was unable to be specific about exactly what they’ll receive.
“I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but I hope we do get something from Yamaha that makes my job a little bit easier this weekend.”
Like their Fiat Yamaha counterparts, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad will run a one-off livery at Laguna, commemorating the Lone Star state of Texas.
“It’s good to have two Texans in the team, so we can do something special with the livery this weekend. We have commitments to our sponsors, which means we haven’t gone all the way with the livery, but it looks pretty good,” added Spies.

Rossi comes fifth as Lorenzo takes pole

Valentino Rossi will start Sunday’s German MotoGP at Sachsenring in fifth position, on his return to action after breaking his leg just six weeks ago. The world champion is on the second row of the grid after Saturday’s qualifying session — completing a remarkable return to the sport following his accident at Mugello last month. “I am really happy after this second day because I feel confident on the bike,” Rossi told the official MotoGP website. “I have suffered more today because we’ve had two sessions instead of one and I have some pain and I’m more tired than Friday, but I feel good and my movement is OK.” Meanwhile, Spain’s Jorge Lorenzo will start in pole position for the fourth successive race, as he seeks to extend his lead in the current title standings. Lorenzo has won the last three races, at Silverstone, Assen and Barcelona, all of which he started from the front of the grid, and is seeking his sixth victory of the season. Joining Lorenzo’s Yamaha on the front row are Australia’s Casey Stoner on his Ducati and Dani Pedrosa of Honda. “This pole position was very hard because Casey and Dani were so fast; I had to push at the maximum and ride really well,” said Lorenzo — the first Yamaha rider since Max Biaggi in 2001 to achieve four or more successive pole positions. source: http://edition.cnn.com/2010/SPORT/motorsport/07/17/motorsport.motogp.lorenzo.germany/index.html?hpt=Sbin&fbid=9hnOo5EbRxh
Rossi feeling good as recovery takes to the track

The reigning World Champion was seventh fastest in the opening practice session at the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, as he made his competitive comeback just six week after fracturing his right tibia.

Just 41 days after suffering an exposed fracture of his right tibia in a crash at Mugello, Valentino Rossi was back on his Fiat Yamaha M1 at Sachsenring on Friday for the first practice of the eni Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland.
Dispelling any doubts over his ability to be competitive the 31 year-old lapped consistently throughout the session, and was amongst the top four for much of the hour-long practice before eventually placing seventh with a best time of 1’23.244, just 0.723s off pace setter Dani Pedrosa and two-hundredths off team-mate and Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo.
“I am really happy today, especially because I am a lot more agile on the bike than I was in the tests (at Misano and Brno),” explained Rossi, whose return to action was feverishly welcomed by both fans and the media. “I feel good and this track is helping me because a lot of it turns to the left. I am feeling quite confident on the bike and also my shoulder is good and not giving me problems. Now I have some pain in the leg and ankle but it’s not too bad.”
Putting in 29 laps during the session Rossi set his best time on his final turn, and is now looking forward to tomorrow’s second practice, which will be followed by the qualifying session.
“I was able to do some laps in a row and I was quite fast so things seem okay,” he observed, before he continued: “Now we will have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how the leg is and whether it has swelled overnight or developed any problems.”
Impressed by the nine-time World Champion’s speedy return to action was his Fiat Yamaha Team Manager Davide Brivio, who stated: “Once again Valentino has surprised everyone! After missing four races and not being completely fit this can be considered a very good session. From a team point of view it was like he had never been away, working on the suspension and searching for the best set-up.”
“His physical condition isn’t too bad, a bit more difficult in the right hand corners and okay on the left, but overall it is a lot better than we expected. We’re very happy and now we’ll see where we can get to tomorrow,” he concluded.
