Maximum snelheid Italie naar 150 km/u

Zeven jaar geleden kwam het voor het eerst ter sprake, maar nu heeft het Parlement eindelijk groen licht gegeven. Italië gaat, daar waar mogelijk, de maximum snelheid op snelwegen verhogen naar 150 km/u.

Nadat een eerdere poging in 2003 uiteindelijk strandde diende de toenmalige Italiaanse Minister van Verkeer Pietro Lunardi in april 2004 een nieuw wetsvoorstel in om op bepaalde snelwegen de maximum snelheid te verhogen naar 150 km/u. Tot nu toe was de maximum toegestane snelheid 130 km/u, maar dat wordt met de goedgekeurde wijziging van verkeersregels bij goed weer opgekrikt naar 150 km/u.

Dat is trouwens niet het enige wat in de Italiaanse verkeerswetgeving is aangepast. Zo mogen jongeren tussen de 18 en 21 jaar, evenals beroepsrijders, voortaan geen druppel alcohol meer op hebben als ze gaan rijden.

“Stoner naar Honda is een schande!”

Taalbarrières zorgen vaak voor misverstanden, wat voor grote problemen kan zorgen. Dit ondervond Nicky Hayden ook toen hij door de Italiaanse pers gevraagd werd wat hij ervan vond dat Casey Stoner naar Honda gaat. Hayden vertelde dat Ducati veel voor Stoner heeft gedaan en andersom en dat hij het jammer vind dat Stoner weg gaat.

Dat lijkt op het eerste gezicht een prima antwoord, maar het was de woordkeuze die Hayden in problemen bracht. De Amerikaan zei letterlijk ‘it’s a shame he is leaving’ (het is jammer dat hij weggaat) maar de overenthousiaste Italianen vatten dit heel anders op. Zij dachten dat hij ‘it’s shameful he is leaving’ (schandalig dat hij weggaat) bedoelde.

Door deze verwarring werd Hayden tijdens het weekend van Laguna Seca overspoeld met Italiaanse reporters. Hayden is dit echter wel gewend, want hij loopt al heel wat jaartjes mee. Hij maakt zich geen zorgen over de roddel dat er onenigheid is tussen hem en Stoner. “Ik ken Stoner al een heel lang en we zijn goede vrienden. We gaan goed met elkaar om en hij weet dat ik zoiets nooit zou zeggen.”

2011 Harley-Davidson CVO First Rides

His insatiable thirst for life is only surpassed by his monthly fuel bill. Whether rocketing on land, flying through the air, or jumping the seas, our Associate Editor does it all and has the scars to prove it.

When it comes to cruiser-style motorcycles it doesn’t get much better than Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) collection. These high-end, American-made street bikes blend boutique hardware, sophisticated electronics, and paint with an elevated degree of fit and finish. This gives the rider the best of both worlds: the exclusiveness of a one-off custom with the everyday reliability of a production motorcycle from a prestigious American factory.

For this coming year, Harley will continue to offer four CVO models to choose from, including three touring capable sleds and one unique crossbreed that blends the best of both the touring and boulevard cruising segments. A multitude of paint schemes give prospective owners up to 11 different flavors in which to experience premium CVO ownership.

Each CVO model uses an up-spec Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 V-Twin with 1803cc of power. This fuel-injected and air cooled motor is the largest-displacement engine produced by The Motor Company and is only available from the factory in CVO models. Power is augmented via a manual 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission and hydraulically assisted clutch with power being diverted to the rear tire through a belt final drive.

The engine is hung with rubber mounts to the steel frame to help isolate vibration. The three dedicated touring machines are all built around the recently redesigned single-spar steel frame and swingarm engineered to withstand the demands of fully loaded pavement pounding for tens of thousands of miles. This updated chassis is a tremendous improvement over pre-2009 model year H-D touring bikes and allows these machines to be ridden with far more control at an elevated street pace.

Suspension consists of a conventional fork and twin rear shocks. (The Electra Glide and Road Glide offer air adjustment). Each CVO rolls on Dunlop’s latest Multi-Tread dual-compound tires which offer a softer, stickier rubber compound on the edges of the tire for use during cornering and a more durable compound at the tire’s center for straight-line touring. This gives the rider enhanced traction in the corner without compromising tread life.

In the electronics department each CVO benefits from an anti-lock braking system (ABS) used on each of the three hydraulically controlled disc brakes (two at the front, one at the rear). Each bike also features electronic cruise control and an integrated iPod compatible audio system (complete with a custom-etched iPod nano, except for the Electra Glide Classic). Further electronic goodies come in the form of key-less ignition and a security system with an integrated siren.

All CVO models feature brilliant paint, color-matched components and expert craftsmanship that is on par with the best motorcycles being produced in Europe and Japan. A plethora of chrome accessories straight from the pages of the Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories catalog are also liberally applied. Each bike also rolls on a unique, eye-catching set of wheels. CVO models are backed by a two year, unlimited mileage warranty.

Grote brand in motorzaak Nuth

In een bedrijf aan de Thermiekstraat op industrietrrein De Horsel in Nuth (Limburg) heeft woensdagochtend vroeg een grote brand gewoed. Dat meldde de brandweer.

De brand brak uit in een machine in het bedrijf Go-Tech, een motorsportbedrijf waar motors, brommers en scooters zijn opgeslagen. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met onderhoud, revisie, reparatie en tuning van onder meer motoren.

De brand dreigde over te slaan naar een naastgelegen timmerfabriek, maar de brandweer wist dat te voorkomen. Brandweerkorpsen uit Heerlen, Brunssum, Schinnen, Born en Sittard rukten met groot materieel uit. De brand brak rond half drie uit. Om vier uur werd het sein brand meester gegeven. Niemand raakte gewond. De oorzaak is onbekend.

2011 Harley-Davidson Sportster SuperLow

How Low can you go?

The Sportster SuperLow is just one of six 2011 Harley-Davidson models we can now tell you about. A new Road Glide Ultra also joins H-D’s OE lineup, plus a quartet of high-end CVO models we’ve already ridden. The Road Glide Ultra is new to the CVO stable, joined by returning teammates Ultra Classic Electra Glide, the popular Street Glide, and the versatile Softail Convertible. Harley-Davidson’s top-selling entry-level bike, the XL883L Low, just got better. In fact, it’s so improved that you might say that this “Shortster” has reached new heights in terms of ride comfort and stability for new and experienced riders.

Here’s the deal: Harley gave the Low a complete makeover for 2011 to improve its suspension for a softer, more compliant ride, while maintaining the low seat height of 25.3 inches – same as on the 2010 edition. But the new model’s chassis is so improved that the revised bike deserves a new name. Enter the SuperLow for 2011.

Visually, the SuperLow appears to be pretty much the same low-to-the-ground model that’s become a favorite these past few years among first-time Harley buyers and women riders. Now here’s the catch: in reality the SuperLow is an all-new model that’s only based on the low-rider theme. In truth, the SuperLow checks in with new suspension calibrations front and rear, new wheel and tires sizes, new fork and gas tank, even a new and better-padded solo seat.

“It’s really a whole-new bike for us,” says project manager Greg Falkner. The result is an entry-level bike that performs so well that SuperLow owners may want to keep their bike even after they gain more experience and confidence in the saddle.

“This bike should continue to suit them as they gain more riding experience,” touts Falkner. In short, this low-riding bike is more than just a beginner’s motorcycle, a stigma that, in the past, has haunted the 883L Low. The SuperLow is a bona fide bike that should appeal to riders of all skill levels, especially those with short inseams.

So how did Harley retain the low seat height while improving the ride? “We made more room under the rear fender for more wheel travel,” explains Falkner. Look at the specifications and you’ll see what he’s talking about. Even though the rear wheel diameter was increased from 16 to 17 inches, wrapping the new five-spoke wheel with a low-profile Michelin radial tire helped reduce overall height. This reduced rear tire height allows for more wheel travel under the fender, so the engineers were able to develop a set of longer-travel shock absorbers (about 5/8-inch longer than the Low’s) for the SuperLow. The new shocks also have recalibrated damping rates to help smooth the ride. You’ll especially feel the difference on the compression stroke where the new shocks and springs do a much better job of soaking up the bumps.

The engineers relocated the ECM (electronic control module), too, moving it from beneath the seat to the steering head. The vacant space made way for more padding in the seat itself, in turn elevating rider comfort, but not the rider. You’ll notice the difference right away, and appreciate it even more after riding a few miles down the road.

There are some subtle improvements up front, and much of the technology was gleaned from the XR1200 model. Foremost, the wheel diameter was reduced from 19 to 18 inches, and a Michelin radial used there, too. The fork legs have slightly recalibrated settings, so the springs are less apt to bottom under normal riding conditions. Wider triple trees spread the legs ever so slightly for the new lighter-weight wheel, in the process giving the bike a more masculine appearance plus more lock-to-lock rotation.

In addition, the new triple trees slightly altered the steering angle and trail to maintain the neutral turn-in attitude found on all Sportsters. H-D engineers describe this as “intuitive handling,” meaning that the bike responds to rider input in an almost programmed manner. That’s especially important considering the SuperLow’s primary audience of newer, less-experienced riders.

A more compliant ride isn’t worth much if the bike’s ergonomics aren’t suited for the rider. And so, for 2011 the SuperLow checks in with more handlebar rise. Think of it as a mini ape-hanger, a trend that’s especially fashionable among the cruiser-bike crowd these days. Your arms maintain a relaxed stretch when reaching to the small-diameter handgrips, and the new seat is placed slightly rearward on the frame so there’s more legroom available when placing your boots on the mid-controls.

The relocated seat also makes room for the SuperLow’s new gas tank, the larger 4.5-gallon fuel cell that originated with the 2004 XL1200C Custom. The new tank (the Low relied on the old peanut-style 3.3-gallon tank) helps lower the bike’s silhouette, yet stretches riding range. Cruising at 65-70 mph delivers up to 50 miles per gallon, so you can easily go 200 miles on a tank of gas.

Nothing was changed to the powertrain, so the SuperLow delivers the same response from its 883cc engine as found on the Low. After the ECM spools up the electronic fuel injection, give the electric-starter’s thumb button a soft push with your thumb. The motor fires right up, settling into a gentle idle. Click the five-speed transmission into first gear, release the easy-pull clutch lever, and the SuperLow motors purposely away.

A minor upgrade to the final-drive gearing helps transfer power in a smoother, more linear manner, too. The final-drive ratio is lower (the final-drive ratio number itself is higher) for easier, snappier acceleration. The goal was to allow the rider smoother throttle control at low speeds, especially when putting through parking lots and such. As a bonus, roll-on power in the mid-rpm range is also slightly more responsive to the rider’s commands.

But the big news about the SuperLow is in how it delivers a more compliant ride for such a low-riding motorcycle. Compared to the Low that it replaces, the SuperLow glides over most bumps, potholes and frost-heave joints with ease. The radial tires also enhance its steady road manners even more.

Despite these improvements, you always need to keep in mind that the improvements can help a bike only so much. The abbreviated suspension eventually bottoms out sooner than you’d like. And, as with any low-riding motorcycle, there’s minimal cornering clearance. In terms of the SuperLow, the footpegs and the lower right-side muffler have a tendency to rub asphalt when bending the bike too far into a turn. (Our biggest complaint when we compared the Low to a Honda Shadow RS in this shootout.)

Otherwise, owners will be rewarded with a bike that’s easy to ride, measurably comfortable and stylish to boot.

100 KM op 1 liter benzine

Wat met een ligfiets kan, moet met een motor ook kunnen! Op collegasite Visordown staat het aardige bericht van de Allert Jacobs die een ongelofelijke 90 kilometer per liter uit zijn Honda ANF125i haalt. De prestatie van de Nederlander is bijzonder want de Honda rijdt normaal gesproken zo’n 45 tot 52 km op een liter. Ook al niet slecht…

Stroomlijn maakt zuinig

Jacobs legt op zijn website uit hoe hij eerst een doodgewone Honda van 125cc ombouwde tot een ligmotor of feetforward. En omdat brandstofbesparing begint bij een goede stroomlijning, heeft hij de motor ook nog in een soort zeppelin gestoken (net als de creaties van Craig Vetter trouwens). Het aerodynamische omhulsel werkt zelfs zó goed dat de motor in theorie 100 kilometer op 1  liter zou kunnen halen! Alleen dit heeft hij nog niet geprobeerd. De omstandigheden dienen namelijk ook goed te zijn, niet te veel tegen- en zijwind, niet te veel zon…

VW-Passat

Jacobs legt uit: “Als ontwerper en bestuurder van gestroomlijnde ligfietsen, heb ik genoten van de voordelen van verminderde luchtweerstand. Het maakt fietsen meer energie-efficiënt en stelt je in staat om sneller te reizen over grotere afstanden. De zitpositie van een ligfiets is comfortabeler, terwijl de toevoeging van een kuip bescherming kan bieden tegen slechte weersomstandigheden. Bovendien leidt de verminderde luchtweerstand tot verbetering van het comfort en tot energiebesparing van de fiets, stel je voor wat mogelijk is met een sneller voertuig!”

Als we terugdenken aan de Indian Arrow uit vroeger tijden dan heeft Jacobs weldegelijk gelijk — met een extreme stroomlijning rij je niet alleen milieuvriendelijk, de motor wordt er ook veel sneller van! Volgens Jacobs laat de ligmotor menigeen zijn achterkant zien. In dit geval zijn dat heuse achterlichten van een VW-Passat. De top van de Honda ligt nu op zo’n 136 km/u maar wie weet met ideale omstandigheden, heuveltje af, windje mee…?

Dutch Superbike Racers zetten tandje bij op Rizla Racing Day

Zeven punten, tien punten, twaalf punten. Dat zijn de onderlinge verschillende tussen de koplopers in de snelste motorwegraceklasse van Nederland; respectievelijk Arie Vos en zijn directe belagers Danny de Boer en Bob Withag. De top drie van Nederland zal tijdens de RIZLA Racing Day een tandje bij moeten zetten nu uit de top van het drukbezette Duitse IDM kampioenschap zich enkele zeer snelle combinaties hebben aangemeld, waaronder, naast gelegenheidsrijder voor RT Motorsports Russel Holland, Barry Veneman en Werner Daemen op de BMW S1000RR, Alex Verleye, Matej Smrz en meervoudig kampioen Martin Bauer en Stefan Nebel van het KTM Superbike Team Germany op de fabrieks KTM RC8R.

Gratis toegang
Toegang tot Neerlands grootste gecombineerde auto-, motor- en kartevenement is al 11 jaar lang GRATIS op vertoon van een RIZLA actievloeiboekje. Het actievloeiboekje is geldig op zondag 8 augustus 2010 en biedt toegang tot de buitenring van het circuit inclusief alle tribunes. Voor mensen die geen RIZLA actievloeiboekje wisten te bemachtigen was daar uiteraard het uit te knippen ‘Free Ticket’ dat onder meer verscheen in de Pioneer Free Ticket Flyer in het TT programma, RTLGP magazine en een reeks aan lokale kranten. Online was het ‘Free Ticket’ te downloaden via Rizla.nl en diverse andere websites.

Indrukwekkende namen
Het IDM Superbike staat bekend om zijn competitieve startveld en ook dit jaar blijkt uit de deelnemerslijst weer dat de lat hoog ligt. Didier van Keymeulen, Jörg Teuchert, Barry Veneman, Gabor Rizmayer, Karl Muggeridge, Vesa Kallio en Matej Smrz (broers van respectievelijk de GP- en de Superbikecoureur) en Werner Daemen; jongens die al op WK-niveau reden en daar gaat het hard! Met de professionele inbreng van de BMW en KTM teams lijkt het Superbike kampioenschap van onze Oosterburen alleen maar sterker te worden. Veel van de IDM-coureurs rijders benutten de Rizla Racing Day met het oog op de race over twee weken. Dan slaat het Duitse kampioenschap IDM haar vleugels uit op het TT Circuit.

Veneman terug op Assen
“Ik moet gewoon winnen”, antwoordt Barry Veneman resoluut wanneer hem gevraagd wordt, hoe hij denkt over de Superbikerace. “Ik rijd heel veel kilometers in Duitsland en het gaat daar erg goed. Dan denk ik dat ik in Assen mee vooraan kan rijden.” Het is alweer een poos geleden dat Barry Veneman in een wedstrijd voor het Nederlands kampioenschap op het TT acteerde. Reden dat hij nauwelijks meer op het TT Circuit Assen te vinden is, houdt verband met zijn overstap naar het Internationale Duitse Kampioenschap IDM. De Nederlander tekende een tweejarig contract bij het Team Alpha Technik-van Zon-BMW om naast Werner Daemen de kleuren te gaan verdedigen van de Duitse motorenfabrikant in het sterk bezette Duits wegracekampioenschap. Mede omdat Veneman nog veel Nederlandse sponsors heeft (onder andere Pioneer) en ook omdat er over twee weken een IDM-race op het TT Circuit wordt gehouden, is hij actief bij deze Rizla Racing Day. “Het is een geweldig evenement. De combinatie autosport en motorsport spreekt mij bijzonder aan, maar ook de gasten van mijn sponsor Pioneer. Ik denk dat wij rond de honderd gasten hebben bij de Rizla Racing Day.”

De BMW-equippe van Veneman staat momenteel bovenaan in het Duits kampioenschap na een dubbeloverwinning van teamgenoot Werner Daemen.De eerste startrij voor de race op de Salzburgring begin juli tekent de merkencompetitiviteit van het IDM: BMW (Werner Daemen), KTM (Stefan Nebel), Ducati (Dario Giuseppetti) en Honda (Karl Muggeridge).

Arie Vos: “Ook Rossi valt weleens”
“Tja, dat is racen”, zegt Arie Vos, wanneer hem gevraagd wordt naar de val tijdens de laatste ONK-race, begin juli op het circuit van Oschersleben. Vos kwam door deze val niet aan de finish en leverde daardoor fiks wat punten in voor het ONK. “Ik kwam over de witte lijn en daarna op kunstgras of gladde curbstones en viel er toen af.” Vos werd vervolgens met de ambulance afgevoerd naar het medisch centrum, maar het viel gelukkig allemaal erg mee voor de onfortuinlijke Ten Kate Honda-coureur. Maar Vos is eerlijk: “Als je gaat racen, moet je gewoon op de baan blijven, dan was er niets aan de hand geweest. Ach, ook Rossi valt weleens”, voegt hij er lachend aan toe.
Vos is overigens nog steeds lijstaanvoerder, hoewel zijn suprematie in het verleden weleens groter is geweest. “Dat klopt, maar de concurrentie is gewoon zwaarder geworden. Kijk eens naar Danny de Boer en Bob Withag. We zijn alle drie kanshebber voor de titel en dat maakt de strijd voor het kampioenschap mooi.” Over zijn machine is Vos tevreden. “Deze loopt goed en ik vertrouw erop dat tijdens de Rizla Racing Day de motor ook perfect is. Ik wil natuurlijk goed voor de dag komen, want het is een prachtig evenement. Er komt veel publiek op af en er zitten veel fans op de tribune.”

De Boer: “Voor Vos en Withag blijven”
Voor Danny de Boer is het duidelijk wat hij wil tijdens de Rizla Racing Day. “Ik moet voor Arie Vos en Bob Withag blijven”, laat de Staphorster vastberaden weten. “Er zijn nog vijf races voor het ONK te gaan en de titelstrijd is nog helemaal open. Ik ga er voor.” Verleden jaar stond Danny de Boer na het seizoen op de 22-ste plek in de eindstand van het ONK Superbike, maar nu prijkt de 20-jarige Honda-rijder op de tweede plaats. “Ik reed verleden jaar naast het ONK ook het Europees Kampioenschap Superstock 1000 en dat is eigenlijk niet te combineren. Je moet een aantal ONK-races laten vallen, vandaar dat ik niet een volledig seizoen heb gereden en dat is terug te vinden in het eindresultaat. Voor Danny de Boer is de Rizla Racing Day toch een bijzondere dag in vergelijking met de andere ONK-wedstrijden. “We hebben dan onze sponsordag waarop we de sponsors Tempo Team Uitzendbureau en Dekatel Telecom uitnodigen. Het is dus wel iets speciaals, omdat we zeker goed voor de dag willen komen voor onze sponsoren. Daarnaast zitten de tribunes bij de Rizla Racing Day altijd vol en het is natuurlijk geweldig om voor veel publiek te rijden.”

Laatste RIZLA Racing Day voor Withag
De Boer voelt in de tussenstand trouwens de hete adem van Bob Withag in zijn nek. Tot aan de laatste wedstrijd had Withag één podiumplek veroverd, maar dat was wel de beste. Hij wist de race in Hengelo winnend af te sluiten, maar verder kon de man uit Borne geen potten breken. Tot de race in Oschersleben. Toen kwam de glans op zijn gelaat weer terug, want Withag reed daar opnieuw naar winst. Voor Bob Withag is dit overigens zijn laatste optreden bij een Rizla Racing Day. De man uit Borne hangt zijn helm aan de wilgen.
In zijn laatste seizoen als actief wegracecoureur heeft Bob Withag uit Borne in Oschersleben laten zien weer volledig terug te zijn in de top. Daar greep Withag de winst. Hij toonde aan dat de lelijke blessure – een ruggenwervelbreuk – hem nauwelijks tot geen parten meer speelt. “Het vormt geen belemmering meer voor mij”, zegt Withag, wanneer hem wordt gevraagd naar de stand van zaken. In maart van dit jaar liep de 30-jarige coureur deze breuk op tijdens trainingen op het circuit Albacete in Spanje. “We zitten nu heel dicht bij elkaar met drie man. Arie Vos en Danny de Boer zijn zeker nog door mij in te halen, maar dan moet ik wel optimaal scoren. Het zal trouwens een prachtige racedag worden, want ik heb gehoord dat er ook een aantal buitenlandse rijders komt. Ik denk dat we misschien wel tien kanshebbers hebben om de winst zondag te pakken.”

Veijer op grote achterstand
Joan Veijer uit Staphorst staat op een teleurstellende tiende plaats in de tussenstand. “Ik heb inderdaad weleens hoger gestaan”, erkent de Honda-rijder met een lach. “Als ik het moet samenvatten is het zo, dat het totaalpakket van de motor niet vergelijkbaar is met het pakket zoals we dat in 2009 hadden. Daarnaast waren er aanpassingsproblemen.” Maar het tij keert volgens Veijer. “Sinds de laatste race op Assen in juni, rijd ik met andere banden. De rondetijden zijn weer sneller geworden en het voelt allemaal lekkerder aan. In Oschersleben reed ik zelfs de snelste raceronde, een teken dat de motor weer op het oude niveau zit.”

Bertus Folkertsma: “In parc fermé de kriebels”
Of hij op zijn thuiscircuit gespannen is voor een groots publieksevenement als de Rizla Racing Day? “Niet meer zo erg als vroeger. Pas in het parc fermé, wanneer je daar met de motoren staat opgesteld, begint het bij mij te kriebelen”, zegt Bertus Folkertsma. De Assenaar klimt tijdens de Rizla Racing Day weer op de motor, nadat hij de wedstrijd in Oschersleben moest laten schieten vanwege een hernia. “Ik kreeg er tijdens de opbouw van ons verblijf op het rennerskwartier tijdens de TT last van. Daarom heb ik die ONK-race tijdens de TT niet meegedaan. En ook Oschersleben moet ik laten schieten, maar nu durf ik het wel weer aan.”

Rintje Ritsma zorgde voor impuls
Nu de laatste fase van het seizoen ingaat wil Folkertsma wel even terugkijken: “Ik ben best tevreden, zoals het gaat. Verleden jaar, toen Rintje Ritsma bij ons in het team kwam, kregen we echt weer een boost. Toen hadden we zoiets van “we gaan er voor”. Misschien was die impuls even noodzakelijk. Het hele team heeft zich er aan opgetrokken en nu zitten we allemaal goed op schema. Het is natuurlijk altijd goed om mensen te ontvangen bij races waar de tribunes mooi vol zitten. Harley-Davidson’s Modest New Line Still Gets Customers Fired Up

Harley-Davidson’s (HOG) 2011 line of motorcycles has everything you’d expect: contemporary custom-designed bikes (”customs”) drenched in chrome and dark retro-style bobbers (bikes with rear fender shortened or “bobbed”) and wicked new colors and graphics.

But there are some new twists to the storied brand, like a built-in iPod Nano; a suspended, heated, two-up seat with leather inserts; dual mufflers featuring new chrome billet end-caps with black spears; and new mirrors finished in chrome.

“Everybody looks forward to seeing what they come out with,” said Glenn Roberts, editor of Ontario-based Motorcycle Mojo magazine. “It seems like their new line is keeping with the trend of putting out a couple of new models and adding a bunch of modifications to existing lines and then giving them new names.”

Overall, the new line Harley introduced Tuesday is modest, with only three new models and a host of upgrades to its existing line. The Milwaukee, Wis.-based company’s Custom Vehicle Operation line, or CVO, is offering new, limited production motorcycles for next year.

Hog Sales Still Slow

The base prices on the new lineup of 2011 CVO Harleys range from $29,500 to $36,500, and the three new production models range in price from $7,999 to $12,799.

Given the soft economy, Harley has been more tentative in recent years with the introduction of new lines. The company’s stock slipped 65 cents, or 2% to close at $28.23 on Tuesday. In after-hours trading it dropped 2.5% more.

Sales are down this year, as they have been for the last three years. Last week, the company reported a $71 million profit, more than triple the same quarter last year. Harley has been saving money by squeezing its operations. It announced plans to cut up to 1,600 jobs by the end of next year. Last year, Harley cut 2,000 jobs, or a fifth of its workforce.

“Our focus on continuous improvement goes beyond simply reducing costs,” said CEO Keith Wandell. “It extends to our ability to deliver the right bikes to the right markets at the right time.”

What About That New Engine?

The three new models add to the existing line of 32 motorcycles. The new line includes the SuperLow, a bike that’s designed for new riders.

Motorcycle blogs were on fire Tuesday following the announcement, focusing on the four limited-production motorcycles. Particularly notable is the custom fuel-injected Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 V-Twin, the largest-displacement engine ever produced by Harley-Davidson.

Production of this motorcycle will be limited to 3,000 units, and the model has a suggested retail price of $35,999. It comes in three custom color schemes: Rio red and black ember with quartzite graphics; charcoal slate and black twilight with quartzite graphics; and frosted ivory and vintage gold with quartzite graphics.

Rossi weer op het podium

“Ik moest het proberen.”

Het is slechts 51 dagen geleden dat Valentino Rossi zijn been brak op Mugello en hoewel de Italiaan pas in Brno werd terugverwacht stond hij gisteren alweer op het podium op Laguna Seca. De regerend wereldkampioen startte vanaf de zesde plaats en eindigde als derde door Andrea Dovizioso vijf ronden voor het einde in te halen en hem met veel moeite achter zich te houden.

“Het was een moeilijke race, omdat dit circuit heel veel van mijn lichaam vergt. Ik had veel last van mijn blessures, ook tijdens de trainingsessies. We hadden de afstellen van mijn motor verbeterd en ik had er vertrouwen in dat ik een goede race zou kunnen rijden. Aan het begin van de race was het echter moeilijk om een goed ritme te vinden en daardoor veloor ik veel tijd. Ik zag dat Pedrosa helaas gevallen was en toen zag ik Dovizioso, die toen derde lag, voor me rijden. Met hem kon ik vechten om een podiumplaats, ik moest het proberen.

De derde plaats is een goed resultaat en ik moet een hoop mensen, die mij hebben geholpen in deze moeilijke tijd, bedanken.” Over drie weken vindt ronde tien van het kampioenschap in Brno plaats, waarbij Rossi hoopt minder last te hebben van zijn blessures. “Ik ga nu genieten van de komende drie weken, want dan kan ik wat werken aan mijn lichaam. Ik hou van Brno en ik hoop minder pijn en meer kracht te hebben bij de volgende race.”

Doi Ithanon Tour:

Doi Ithanon is the highest mountain of Thailand (2590 m). On top of the mountain we will visit a very nice temple. We will drive through the national park to the top of the mountain. On the way we will pass some amazing waterfalls. We will also visit the two chedi’s, one is for the King and one for the Queen.

Tour to Pai:

Pai is famous because there use to live a lot of old hippies in the town. The ride to it has very beautiful roads where you can enjoy nature at the full most. In Pai we will make a stop so you can walk around in the city. You really have the feeling you will be stepping back in time at this place.

Tour to Fang:

On this tour we go again into the mountains. In the city Fang we will go visit some of the hot springs. There is also an opportunity to go rafting on the river.

Night tour Chiang Mai:

We will go see the city Chiang Mai by night. this is  very nice experience because all the buildings and fountains of the city look like magic because of the nice spotlights. And of course all the beer bars with their Christmas lights on.
